Step-by-Step Guide on How to Install Solar Panels for Your Home

Solar panels are getting more and more popular as a sustainable and cost-effective way to generate electricity. Installing solar panels can seem like a big task so many people ask, “How to Install Solar Panels?” The answer is that with a clear, step-by-step approach, you can manage it. Installing the Solar Mounting Structure:

The first thing you need to do is install the mounting structure that will hold the solar panels. This should be tilted at 15-20 degrees to get maximum sunlight. In the Northern Hemisphere, the south is the best direction for solar panels, as it gets the most sunlight so install accordingly.

  • For Sloped Roofs: A railed system is commonly used. This involves attaching a rail to the roof which will hold the solar panels. Flashings, screws, and bolts are used to secure these rails by drilling into the roof and using sealant to prevent water leaks.
  • For Flat Roofs: Installers use ballasts or concrete blocks to support the solar panels.

Once the structures are in place, install the racking rails. On installation day, make sure the solar racking system matches your design and plans.

Mounting the Solar Panels:

After the mounting structure is in place, you can now attach the solar panels. Align the panels so the mounting holes match up with the rails. Use stainless steel nuts, bolts, and washers to secure each panel at least 4 points.

Leave at least a 10mm gap between the two panels for thermal expansion. Place the next panel on the rails; and make sure the clamps are between the two panels. Always use stainless steel fixings and choose the length of the mounting screw to have 5-10mm clearance between the back of the module and the screw face to prevent any damage during tightening. Finally, tighten the clamps between the panels.

Wiring and Connecting Solar Panels:

Any wiring that will be done should be customary to the electrical codes. Here, it will be appropriate to interconnect the solar panels by joining the MC4 connectors and the junction boxes. A number of panels can be connected in series to get the required voltage or in parallel to get the required current.

  • Series Connection: Join the Positive (+) terminal of first panel to the Negative (–) terminal of second panel. This raises the voltage and at the same time, the current remains constant.
  • Parallel Connection: Join Positive (+) and Positive (+) Together and Negative (-) and Negative (-) Together. This keeps the voltage the same and increases the current.

Make sure the maximum output voltage of the string doesn’t exceed the inverter’s input voltage considering temperature variations. Match the polarities when connecting to avoid damaging the panels. During installation, make sure the panels are not connected to the load and the grid is off for safety.

Connecting the Solar Panel Array to the Inverter:

After wiring the panels, connect the positive wire from the solar panel to the positive terminal of the inverter and the negative wire to the negative terminal. Make sure the terminals match.

Connecting the Inverter to the Battery (for Off-grid Systems):

For off-grid systems, connect the inverter to the battery to store it for later use. Connect the positive to the positive and the negative to the negative.

Connecting the Inverter to the Power Grid (for On-grid Systems):

If your grid is connected, connect the inverter to the main switchboard. This will allow any excess energy to be fed back into the grid.

Turning on the Inverter:

Once all connections are made, switch on the solar inverter. Check the digital display to see everything is working and to monitor real-time energy production and usage.

Earthing:

Earthing is important for safety in solar system installations. Make sure the modules, inverters, and grid connection are earthed. Copper strip earthing is recommended for better conductivity and durability.

  •  Underestimating Energy Needs: Be sure to always estimate your energy consumption in order to do away with situations where you might end up using small-sized panels.
